If there is one universal truth in Clash of Clans, it is this: your heroes determine your attack ceiling more than any other single factor. A player with maxed heroes and average troops will consistently out-perform a player with maxed troops and weak heroes. Heroes are always on the field, they reset between attacks, and at higher Town Hall levels they carry entire raid strategies on their backs.
This guide breaks down every hero, the correct upgrade priority at every Town Hall from TH7 to TH18, the Hero Equipment system, Dark Elixir farming strategies, and the smart use of Books and Hammers.
Why Heroes Are the Most Important Upgrades
Heroes are permanent. Every other troop gets used once and must be brewed again. Heroes regenerate automatically and are available for every attack you make — multiplayer, Clan War, CWL, Clan Games, Legend League.
Key reasons to always prioritize heroes:
- They scale with your attack strategy — stronger heroes open more powerful strategies
- Hero abilities become dramatically more effective at higher levels
- In CWL and Legend League, hero levels directly determine competitive viability
- Every Dark Elixir you have should go into heroes first
The Four Heroes
Barbarian King (TH7+)
Ground melee tank. Iron Fist ability summons Barbarians, boosts speed and damage, regenerates health. Primary role: tanking in funnels and walks.
Archer Queen (TH9+)
The most important hero in the game. Ranged DPS. Royal Cloak ability — goes invisible, summons Archers, regenerates health. Enables Queen Walk — the most powerful funnel tool. Always upgrade AQ first from TH9 onward.
Grand Warden (TH11+)
Support hero with passive aura buffing nearby troops' HP. Eternal Tome ability — makes all nearby troops temporarily invincible. Can toggle between Ground and Air mode.
Royal Champion (TH13+)
Ranged DPS hero targeting defenses. Seeking Shield ability — bounces between multiple defenses dealing high damage. Exceptional at dismantling defense clusters.
Hero Upgrade Priority by Town Hall
| Town Hall | BK Cap | AQ Cap | GW Cap | RC Cap | Priority Order |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| TH7 | 5 | — | — | — | BK |
| TH8 | 10 | — | — | — | BK |
| TH9 | 30 | 30 | — | — | AQ > BK |
| TH10 | 40 | 40 | — | — | AQ > BK |
| TH11 | 50 | 50 | 20 | — | GW(1-20) > AQ > BK |
| TH12 | 65 | 65 | 40 | — | AQ > GW > BK |
| TH13 | 75 | 75 | 50 | 25 | RC(1-25) > AQ > GW > BK |
| TH14 | 80 | 80 | 55 | 30 | AQ > RC > GW > BK |
| TH15+ | 90+ | 90+ | 65+ | 40+ | AQ > RC > GW > BK + Equipment |
TH7-8: BK Only
Push Barbarian King as high as possible. Stockpile DE for unlocking AQ at TH9.
TH9: AQ First (Most Important)
AQ to 30 is the #1 priority. Queen Walk becomes available and transforms your attack capability. Never let AQ sit idle — always queue the next upgrade. If you only have DE for one hero, always choose the Queen.
TH10: AQ to 40 > BK to 40
Same principle. AQ should never be more than 5-10 levels behind your TH cap.
TH11: GW to 20 First
Grand Warden's early levels are cheap and fast. Get him to 20 quickly for the aura bonus, then shift DE back to Queen. After GW 20, resume AQ priority.
TH12: AQ > GW > BK
AQ cap jumps to 65. A Level 65 Queen with full Cloak can reliably deal with Eagle Artillery areas.
TH13: RC to 25 First
Royal Champion starts at Level 1 and needs investment to be useful. Get her to 25 where Seeking Shield becomes meaningful, then resume AQ-first.
TH14: AQ > RC > GW > BK
All heroes push toward max (80/80/55/30). The gap between TH13 and TH14 hero levels is substantial.
TH15-18: Equipment System Dominates
Heroes still level up, but effectiveness is heavily influenced by Hero Equipment. Balance DE for levels and Ores for equipment.
Hero Equipment System (TH15+)
Each hero has two equipment slots with swappable items. Upgraded using Ores (Shiny, Glowy, Starry). Epic equipment is significantly more powerful than Common.
Best Equipment Per Hero (2026)
Barbarian King: Giant Gauntlet (Epic) + Vampstache
Archer Queen: Frozen Arrow (Epic) + Healer Puppet
Grand Warden: Eternal Tome + Rage Gem (Epic)
Royal Champion: Hog Puppet (Epic) + Rocket Spear
Equipment Upgrade Priority
- 1Frozen Arrow (AQ) — transforms Queen Walk
- 2Hog Puppet (RC) — massive RC charge impact
- 3Giant Gauntlet (BK) — changes BK's role
- 4Rage Gem (GW) — amplifies Eternal Tome

Dark Elixir Farming Tips
Best Strategies
- Goblin Knife (TH9-11): Small army of Goblins + Giants + Wall Breakers targeting DE storages
- Sneaky Goblin farming (TH12+): Super Goblins invisible for 5 seconds, deal double damage to resources
- Target rushed bases with full DE storages and weak defenses
Maximize Passive Income
- Upgrade all Dark Elixir Drills to max
- Collect frequently — full drills stop producing
- Spend DE immediately — resources in storage can be stolen
Should You Upgrade Heroes During CWL?
Best approach: Use Books of Heroes or Hammers during CWL — instant completion means hero is available for all 7 attacks.
If no Books/Hammers: Pause hero upgrades during CWL. A sleeping hero during the 8-day event hurts more than one level helps.
Exception: If CWL is casual for your clan, continue upgrading.
Books and Hammers — Efficient Usage
Book of Heroes
- Instantly completes any hero upgrade
- When to use: Before CWL, on Level 40+ heroes where downtime is 7-14 days
- When NOT to use: On low-level heroes where impact is minimal
Hammer of Heroes
- Covers resource cost AND time
- When to use: Only on Level 70+ heroes where cost is 200K+ DE and time is 14+ days
Priority
Always use magic items on the Archer Queen above all other heroes.
Common Hero Upgrade Mistakes
- 1Ignoring AQ for BK — AQ provides dramatically more value per DE spent
- 2Rushing TH with underleveled heroes — Creates a months-long deficit
- 3Saving DE instead of spending — Sitting in storage earns nothing, can be stolen
- 4Using Books on low-level heroes — Save for Level 40+ where downtime is 7-14 days
- 5Not queuing immediately — Check heroes every login, queue next level instantly
- 6Neglecting Equipment at TH15+ — Epic equipment multiplies hero effectiveness
- 7Upgrading GW before AQ at TH12+ — GW-first only applies to first 20 levels at TH11
- 8Not setting GW to correct mode — Always check Ground vs Air before attacking
FAQ
AQ or BK first at TH9? Always Archer Queen. She enables Queen Walk and her Royal Cloak scales dramatically.
Can I use a hero during an upgrade? No. Heroes are unavailable while upgrading. Books and Hammers skip downtime.
How long to max all heroes? TH9 to TH12 max: 6-9 months. TH13 to TH14 max: 3-5 months. Season Pass books accelerate significantly.
Is the Royal Champion worth upgrading early? Yes — get her to Level 25 at TH13. After that, resume AQ-first priority.
Best DE farming at TH9? Goblin Knife targeting DE storages. Farm at Champion league where opponents have fuller storages.
Do hero levels matter in Legend League? Absolutely. Hero levels are a primary factor determining your ceiling.
Heroes or Lab first? Heroes first, always. The only exception is unlocking a troop that enables an entirely new strategy.
